Social Media and the Future of Communication: A Psychology of Social Relationships
Communication lies at the crux of social relationships in the 21st century and social media has redefined communication like never before, thus also redefining social relationships.
This paper provides a fresh and unique insight into the nature and dynamics of social relationships as facilitated by social media. The paper considers social media platforms such as social networking through Linkedin, Facebook; macro and micro blogging through Blogger, Twitter; and social interaction through Flickr, Digg and other similar sites. The various facets of social media would highlight the different communication channels that are available to web users and suggest possible directions in social relationships of the future considering the impact of each of these platforms.
The aim of the paper is to show how social media has changed communication and redefined social relationships in a connected world. A theory of social relationships will be provided highlighting the importance of communication and suggest a shift in our perceptions and in the way we derive meanings from verbal and non verbal interaction. The paper will present a comprehensive psychology of social relationships with a theoretical model emphasizing the elements of networking, communication and interaction as central to understanding the dynamics of 21st century relationships.
About the Author/Speaker
Saberi Roy is a writer, poet, analyst, political commentator, psychologist and writes on sciences, arts, religions, politics, human rights, trends/social change and philosophy. She has Masters degrees in Philosophy (MA), in Psychology (MSc) and in Consciousness Studies with QM (MS) and has been educated in UK, India and Austria. Saberi works as an independent writing consultant and contributes to several US, UK and European journals and think tanks on a regular basis as a columnist, political and social commentator and social change analyst and is also writing an ongoing series in Psychology to provide new insights into human thinking. This is published as a book series Reflections in Psychology and some of her essays are digitized and distributed by Widernet, the University of Iowa digital archives project. Her poetry and psychology articles are both available in book formats. Saberi’s work has been quoted in research papers and also included in the curricula.
